What You Should Know About Your Spare Tire

While some Acura models include a full-size replacement tire, some come standard with what the industry refers to as a donut tire. These spares are temporary replacements designed to get you back on the road and on your way to a tire center. Donuts aren’t bad, per se, but they do require different driving techniques than normal tires. If your spare tire is a temporary donut tire, here are a few things you should do to stay as safe as possible until you get your full-sized tire fixed.

Drive Slowly

Donut tires are significantly skinnier than full-size tires and cannot handle high speeds without making your vehicle’s handling dangerous. The narrow tire width alters your Acura’s braking, cornering, and traction, making it dangerous to travel at high speeds. Try to stay under 50 mph as long as you’re driving on a temporary tire.

Replace It As Soon As Possible

The temporary donut tire is designed to be exactly that – temporary. The material used in the donut tire is not up to the same longevity standards as full-size tires. There’s less rubber and protective coatings between the inner tube and the road, and extended use of the donut can lead to the material breaking down. The last thing you want is a flat spare tire! Replace your donut tire as soon as possible.

Check Air Pressure Regularly

Be sure to check the air pressure of your spare tire frequently, even when you’re not using it. A flat spare tire won’t do you any good if you’re in an emergency situation on the side of the road. Most donut tires should be kept at 60 psi, but always check your individual tire’s specifications to ensure you have the proper psi.

Consider Upgrading Your Spare

If you’re concerned about being able to drive on the highway or for longer distances before getting your damaged tire fixed, you may want to upgrade your spare tire to a full-size option. Keeping a full-size tire in your trunk as a spare will give you peace of mind, especially if you do a lot of highway driving. As long as the tire is properly inflated, you’ll be able to drive over 50 mph and you’ll be able to put off fixing your flat for a bit longer!
